We use the chocolate mint for mojitos and use the leaves in the drink. The plant is really healthy, but their are little gnats or something all over it. We don't really enjoy bugs in our drinks.
How do you keep bugs off of a chocolate mint plant?
I grow chocolate mint and spearmint. They've invasive, but they smell so good. Fortunately I haven't had any pests in mine.
The following article http://www.superbherbs.net/mint.htm lists some pests that may affect mint (spider mites, aphids, and flea beetles). Click on each pest name for more information.
Good luck!
Reply:Put up a sign. All bug please stay off the chocolate mint plant, the owner. That should do it.
Reply:Okay, first thing ya need to do, is find out what kinda bugs they are. Once known, then try and use a "non chemical" contol (cause most bug sprays have residual effect and you don't want a DDT Mojito). As a general spray in my garden, I use a mixture of crushed garlic (10-ish cloves), chilli powder (about a teaspoon), white oil (about 2 tablespoons) two drops of detergent and soak overnight in 500 millilitres of water. Strain it into one of those sprayer bottles and go play spray the bugs :). Make sure you wash the mint leaves before making your drink though :).
PS. Ya owe me a Mojito now :)
