Linux Mint is it really any different, or is it just Ubuntu with flashy face paint?

The reason I ask this is, I have always considered Linux Mint to be Ubuntu on steroids.

What are your views on this ?

Linux Mint is it really any different, or is it just Ubuntu with flashy face paint?
Hi, yeah it used to be tru in the beginning that linux mint was ubuntu with a new theme, but now thats no longer true, apart from codecs there is a lot of difference.

They have their own update system, some of their own repos, they have their own back up systems, which r really cool and they continuously back port stuff so linux mint 5 will have newer software 2 years later than hardy does.

Something really important about them is that they do fix software bugs, those r the ones ubuntu misses, I have read some of their devs hang out in the launch pad to find out major bugs and fix those. Plus u can uninstall an app just by right clicking on it, they r improving gnome.
Reply:Linux Mint is better if you're going to be installing Linux on a lot of machines at once, because a lot more stuff comes preinstalled.

However, if you're doing a single machine for yourself I'd stick with Ubuntu and just add what you need as you go along.

If you have trouble getting DVDs to play or getting Java installed then maybe Mint would have been a better idea...
Reply:Good question Lug- Mint Daryna(?) was my 1st Mint effort, and I broke it. LOL! Liked it, just had some wierd video conflict, I could never get straight. Been wanting to try it again. Snakes post is pretty spot on. I read everything I can on the major distros, to try and keep up. Been playing with some new stuff and want some opinions on it when I get to a question phase, but overall, my Ubu 7.10 has remained rock steady and the most stable of anything I've put some miles on. Not all that pretty in Gnome, but I need one distro I can count on, while I 'play' and tinker on others.
Reply:I adore it this is why I always suggest it it comes preconfigured just the way I want a linux OS to work yes ubuntu on steroids is a good way to put it I think vista is gonna be great for linux its why I switched all the way over
