How do you mix a mojito and/or mint julep?

Summertime...and the livin' is easy... and mint is taking over most of my back garden.

I have rum (for mojito), bourbon (for julep), ice, and tons of mint. But I have a feeling there's more to it than that. Alcoholic enlightenment please?

How do you mix a mojito and/or mint julep?
Mojito recipe

Scale ingredients to servings

3 fresh mint sprigs

2 tsp sugar

3 tbsp fresh lime juice

1 1/2 oz light rum

club soda

In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with *chilled* club soda (or seltzer). Add a lemon slice and the remaining mint, and serve.

mint julep

2 cups granulated sugar

2 cups water (branch water is ideal)

Fresh Mint

Crushed Ice

Kentucky Bourbon (2 ounces per serving)

Make a simple mint syrup* by boiling sugar and water together for 5 minutes; cool. Place in a covered container with 6 or 8 bruised mint sprigs. Refrigerate overnight.

Make a julep by filling a julep cup* or glass with crushed ice, then adding 1 tablespoon of mint syrup and 2 ounces of bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost outside of cup or glass. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig..

*This makes enough syrup for about 44 juleps.
Reply:You'll want to serve the mint leaves slightly groung up IN the Mojito for maximum flavor, refreshment, and presentation. You'll mix the rum (light rum of course), with simple syrup (sugar water, basically), rim the glass with sugar, and stir (or shake) in the minced mint leaves. This is an awesome drink for summer!
Reply:a few close answers but not quite right. You want a tall "old fashioned" glass. Toss in about 10 mint leaves and a teaspoon and a half of sugar. You need a tool called a "muddler" but if you have a wooden spoon with a large handle that will work too. With your muddler you will grind up the mint leaves (the sugar does the cutting) untill you have a fine paste in the bottom of the glass. Tip, if you think you have muddled it enough do it for 2 more minutes. Toss in a couple ice cubes, a shot and a half of light rum (for mojito's) or bourbon (for mint julip) top off with a splash of seltzer (heck, I've used sprite in a pinch). Sit back and enjoy!
Reply:You are supposed to grind the mint in the bottom of the glass you are making a mojito in, allowing the oils to cover the bottom. It is easier and safer to grind them seperately, then put them into a glass, while pouring the liquid contents in it.

handfull of mint (3 sprigs are not enough) and Crushed ice in a glass, use a wooden "crusher" (buy at a liquor stoor) and crush the ice and mint together while twisting the wooden crusher.

Add 2 tee spons of powdered sugar, 4-6 cl white rum and add soda water...mmmmmmmmm! The perfect summer drink!
